Forty-three years ago, a strange series of events unfolded on the island of Singapore. Hundreds of men rushed to the hospitals of the island with the terrifying belief that their penises were shrinking. Each feared that if his penis shrank away completely, he would die. Some came with lucky red strings tightly wrapped around their penises to prevent the lethal disappearance. Others had clamps holding their wayward organs in place. Most often it was a firm grasp of a hand, their own or a frightened family member’s, that prevented the shrinking penis from slipping away and taking their life with it. Oddly enough, about a dozen women also fell victim to the panic. This was the Great Singapore Penis Panic, or what doctors refer to as an epidemic of the psychiatric condition called Koro. The Great Singapore Penis Panic and the Future of American Mass Hysteria explains the basis of koro in Chinese medicine, and how and why something so peculiar as the Singapore Koro epidemic could have happened when it did.

Really with a title like that, you don't even need to write a good book - but this is a very fun, enlightening semi-sociological study of a true episode in Singapore history. The author takes it well beyond that incident to talk about cultural fears, "urban legend" sorts of mass panic etc. I enjoyed it especially because I was about to visit Singapore but this is of interest also to psychology majors, people interested in cross-cultural phenomena or just unusual events.Product details

The Great Singapore Penis Panic and the Future of American Mass Hysteria edition by Scott Mendelson Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
I like the straight forward approach Dr Mendelson takes with the subject matter. He has an ability to distill information and write in a style that is approachable and concise. His insight into the Chinese culture and medicine makes clear how this hysteria occurred, and points to the implications for American and other cultures. This book is a great read for anyone interested in social or psychological studies. Enjoyed and recommended.
Dr. Mendelson writes in a manner that is a pleasure to read. His reference books and his fiction as well as his research is thorough, accurate and informative.
Thank you Dr. Mendelson. I myself have sometimes suffered from shrinking penis, especially after swimming in cold water. Though I have never found this condition life threatening it can certainly be embarrassing, especially at a nude beach. However, with the help of my wife I believe we have found an effective treatment with the application of direct oral stimulation. I admit that these results are preliminary, but I am looking forward to conducting further experiments for confirmation. Note - There can be side effects such as excitability, euphoria, drowsiness and/or sleep, (Not recommended while driving a motor vehicle.)
Seriously, I found this a very interesting book. I have traveled to Singapore and it is a fascinating country. Your insight into its history and culture is enlightening. But just as interesting is the application of those insights to other cultures, including our own. Good book. Don Detrich
This is either the 3rd or 4th book I've read by Dr. Mendelson. I like the unique topics he covers, and his writing style is intelligent, enjoyable and easy to follow - even the technical stuff. Penis Panic will not only school you on the topic presented, but you'll also get a primer on Chinese Medicine, how one's culture drives their craziness, and Freud's psychosexual model. Also, Dr. Mendelson's description of his stay in Singapore is colorful and humorous - makes me want to go there! Dr. Mendelson says a lot in this book, and he says it well.
Very interesting book about cultural differences.
The title is a bit sensationalistic but that's about what it takes to get people's attention these days. Don't let this fool you, however - this is a well crafted, lucidly written account of a far eastern phenomenon that provides a context for a larger discussion - given the right set of factors, humans can be led to passionately think incredible things and, ultimately, act out in deadly ways. Mendelson carefully outlines the cultural, social, psychological and political context for the Singapore Koro epidemic of 1967. This is an important study of the complicated, multifaceted considerations that would form the backdrop for what seems to be an absurd belief - that one's penis is shrinking and that this would be fatal. This is a very readable, compelling story. He handles this with grace and sensitivity, seeking to understand how such an event could occur. In many ways this is a cautionary tale - given a right conditions, no group is immune to forming outrageously irrational conclusions and decisively acting on those conclusions. Mendelson provides numerous examples from recent history. He avoids concluding with moralizing prescriptions. Highly recommended.
In October and November of 1967, four hundred sixty-nine people (including fifteen women) were treated for a malady known to traditional Chinese medicine as koro - the shrinking of the penis into the abdominal cavity, resulting in death.
Dr. Scott D. Mendelson has written what reminds me of nothing so much as a lengthy term paper on the subject.
I skimmed approximately 30% of this book. [Edited for clarity While I skimmed approx. 30% of this book, I did read the remaining 70%.] It's extremely unusual for me to do any skimming at all; I'm one of those people who has to read EVERY WORD. If I don't like it enough to read it, I simply abandon a book and move on. This time, I was interested enough in the subject matter to attempt to continue reading.
The details of the actual epidemic of koro are related in their entirety at least three times. Chapters cover disparate subjects with no narrative connection. The manuscript is poorly edited and contains enough typos and mechanical errors to be actively distracting. Book design is clunky and awkward, including bibliographical citations at the end of each chapter. The actual information presented, however, is interesting and well-researched. An excellent early chapter covers the basic tenants of traditional Chinese medicine, and a later chapter covers "culture bound syndromes" of various cultures, including America (the book does not otherwise discuss the US, despite the subtitle).
Due specifically to the lack of narrative flow, the lack of editing, and the excess of tangential information, this book is only recommended to those particularly interested in psychiatry or, er, penises.
Really with a title like that, you don't even need to write a good book - but this is a very fun, enlightening semi-sociological study of a true episode in Singapore history.
